Sarah Macfarlane
Director and clinical lead

After qualifying as a pharmacist from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen I started my career in community pharmacy. Looking forward to working directly with patients, I thoroughly enjoyed this role. However, I wanted to expand my clinical knowledge to allow me to deliver better, more holistic care. I made the decision to branch into primary care to achieve this.

Primary Care Pharmacist

I joined NHS Fife and took on the role as a Primary Care Pharmacist covering a number of GP practices. Working in doctors surgeries was invaluable in giving me an understanding of the interface between GP practices and community pharmacies. During this time I returned to Robert Gordon University and qualified as an independent prescriber.

Specialist Pharmacist for Addiction Services

From here I was offered an opportunity to specialise and at this point I joined the Mental Health Team within NHS Fife hospitals, where I was appointed as the Specialist Pharmacist for Addiction Services. In this post I gained my Post Graduate qualifications in Psychiatric Therapeutics from Aston University in Birmingham.

I have learned a great deal clinically in this role and in addition I have gained experience of designing safe and effective services. I love working with patients, prescribing medication to help them achieve their recovery goals.

I am passionate about my work in Addiction Services and I am extremely proud of how much we have achieved in improving services and we strive to continue to do so. This is a post I still hold today, though not doing quite as many hours as when I started back in 2019! These days I largely focus on writing clinical guidelines- a hugely important task to ensure we are keeping our prescribing safe and up to date as research continues to develop.

Community Pharmacist

In 2024 you could say I returned to my roots: I opened my own community pharmacy in Stirling, near to where I grew up, in Dunblane. I work there part time and I love being back in the community. My experience from both my GP practice role and my roles in the hospital have given me a completely different outlook and it has enabled me to provide a better level of care to the neighbourhood. I have a wonderful team in Macfarlanes Pharmacy and I am very proud of the quality of care we deliver. In this role I prescribe for many common clinical conditions but have a particular interest in managing skin conditions such as eczema and acne

Medical Weight Loss Expert

At the time when I opened the pharmacy there was a sudden surge in the availability and awareness of injectable weight loss medications. It was a chance conversation with a patient that started my journey of prescribing these medications privately. I was alarmed to hear they had purchased these medications online, without a thorough consultation and without any ongoing support or follow up. I decided that if people want these medications then I wanted to be able to provide them in a safe and supported way. In the early days, when there was considerable stigma surrounding the use of weight loss medication and not much support from the majority of people in healthcare, I suppose I became a dissenting voice! So much so, I was invited to speak at a healthcare conference regarding the potential use of weight loss injections within the NHS in Scotland.

Member of the British Menopause Society

In addition to my interest in weight loss medications, my return to community pharmacy prompted an interest in women’s health. I noticed during consultations that many women would like to discuss symptoms they are experiencing relating to peri/menopause. In order to expand my knowledge and skills and provide better care to women, I have become a member of  the British Menopause Society and have gained my Certificate in the Management of the Menopause.

ADHD Care Provider

More recently, I was invited to deliver a prescribing clinic for patients diagnosed with ADHD. In contrast to my work in Addiction Services, this clinic is for children and young people. It has been a privilege to get this opportunity and something I have particularly enjoyed. I look forward to continuing my work in this field.

My Philosophy: Family-First Healthcare

I opened The Tarvit Clinic in order to be able to focus more on my specialist areas of expertise and the clinic location was chosen to allow me to balance my professional life with my role as a mum to my three little boys and their little sister. I have tried to create a warm and inviting space where healthcare can be delivered in a more homely environment. The clinic is very much a family-friendly space. As a mum, I completely understand it is not always possible to get to appointments alone! If childcare is an issue, please don’t feel you can’t bring them- I love to meet children and we have some toys and books here to keep little ones occupied.

I look forward to welcoming you to The Tarvit Clinic,
